In the late 1980s, Swiss Re began to take a more focused and systematic approach to building a collection and exhibiting art on the premises. Advised by outside experts, an Art Committee was formed that determines the works to be commissioned and purchased.
Initially, the collection was devoted exclusively to recent contemporary art in Switzerland. Following the growing international activities of the company in the 1990s, acquisitions soon branched out into international contemporary art.

The Art at Swiss Re collection now includes some 3,000 works in Swiss Re centres around the world, comprising a wide range of media: paintings, photographs, sculpture, drawing and graphic art. In more recent years, the committee has also commissioned projects and specific installations for Swiss Re buildings, most prominently in Zurich, Rüschlikon, London, Munich, Paris, Armonk/NY and New York City.
