"My role is not to paint beautifully so that it will be beautiful, not to make a good painting." For Eugène Leroy, painting is a battle with the subject matter from which he struggles to wrest a form. In the end, however, art is always victorious. Whilst the motif is slowly engulfed by multiple layers of paint, the paint as a material increases in substantiality and presence. Only individual lighting effects and traces of colour are reminiscent of the human figure on this artistic battlefield.
