Wall Drawing #1168, Curved Color Bands,2005 Wall drawing, mural work, 13 x 23 m © 2006, ProLitteris, Zürich Though wall drawings and paintings go back to the beginning of recorded human existence, it was Sol LeWitt who pioneered the use of wall works -- art applied directly on the wall -- in a contemporary art context. Beginning with pencil lines in the late 1960s, his wall drawings evolved over time. He began using coloured pencils and curving geometric forms and later expressive undulating patterns made up of ebullient colours painted in acrylic. For wall pieces like this one, LeWitt provides a set of instructions, which are then carried out by assistants. This working process undermines and weakens the notion of the work of art as the unique product of the artist's own hand -- a core motivation of Conceptual Art. It also liberates it from being too controlled. |
