Untitled 45, Charcoal on paper, 100.5 x 65.5 cm © Nicola Tyson In her paintings and drawings, Nicola Tyson typically depicts solitary female figures with expressive distorted shapes and in some cases with elements of self-portraiture. The artist herself refers to her work as "psycho-figuration", an apt description of this distinctive mix between abstraction and figuration. With their erotic imagery and psychological weight, her works explore aspects of gender, sexuality and individual identity, as in Untitled 45, which shows a bound female figure with a gaping mouth and mask of a face, her rounded thighs tapering down to tiny pinpoint feet. |
