Adrian Schiess achieved international renown with his so-called "flat works", panels of wood or aluminium mechanically sprayed with an even high-gloss coat of monochromatic or nearly monochromatic auto enamel and placed flat on the floor. The work Fenster (Window), by contrast, addresses the site-specific context across from a bank of windows, with the direct hand of the artist more apparent in the muted shades of grey-blue and red-orange applied directly to the wall. The artist explains what he is driving at when he fills spaces with colour: "The relationship of colour and space is much more important to me than, for instance, its connection with form or illustration. Obviously colour and form are related but the meaning of form is secondary in this respect."
