Graeser Camille, *1892 1980 (Carouge, Switzerland) Worked with painting, sculpture, prints and design. Rote Dominante,1957 Oil on canvas, 72 x 72 cm © 2007, Pro Litteris, Zurich Camille Graeser was a successful commercial artist and interior and product designer before embarking on his career as an artist in 1937. He quickly became one of the best-known promoters of Constructivist and Concrete Art. From the 1940s onwards, he abstained from every visible reference to reality and constructed his pictures totally according to mathematical and geometrical rules and principles. For him, "concrete" not only meant "purity, law and order" but also the "visible presentation of painted sound, a sort of optical music". |
