An Arcadian Dream Garden, with Nicholas Sloan,2004
20 inscriptions engraved on granite slabs,

An Arcadian Dream Garden, a work of twenty engraved stone benches, is a special commission for the plaza of the London headquarters by Scottish artist, writer, gardener and poet Ian Hamilton Finlay. Reading a poem, word or sentence is not merely about making sense of a given string of written signifiers; for Finlay, it also includes the surrounding context and the archaeology of the medium in which they are given physical shape. Here he works with multiple fragments, placing words in an urban context, where the tension between what they mean or we imagine they might mean and their potential referential impact is subtly and delightfully underscored by the fact that we can sit next to or even on them.
