However varied its technical form may be, a common theme underlies all of Ugo Rondinone's work, namely, the state of being torn between addiction and satisfaction, between excess and boredom. The concentric circles of colour hovering around an empty centre are reminiscent of the targets painted by Jasper Johns and Kenneth Noland. They develop an effect similar to a vortex, like floodgates into a different, cryptic reality.

Yellow anodized aluminium, stainless steel screws, 322 x 817 x 20 cm

A sun made of yellow anodized aluminium radiates across one entire wall in the cafeteria. Suspended from the ceiling, a net of tiny glass beads creates an abstract spectacle of nature. The radiance of the relief created by Ugo Rondinone pits artificiality against nature.
Situated in a regularly used public room as opposed to a dedicated art space, Rondinone sought to make gestures that would be generally comprehensible: “A net can protect you but it can also trap you. It can be a force field. And it’s a situation in which, for once, art has a look about it that is intentionally seductive.”

As in this horizontal stripe painting, the titles of Rondinone's paintings are often dates, with the day, month and year spelled out as a single German compound word. A chartable moment in time, perhaps marking when the work was begun or completed. Or, as described by fellow artist Liam Gillick, "a reminder of one day removed from the rest, one day where things worked out well. A registration and acknowledgement that, in lieu of other ideas, today remains a day for something. A time to produce a strangely reduced excess of beauty."

Ugo Rondinone used this title previously for a 1998 work featuring a plastic-wrapped stone from the Ticino region of Switzerland along with an edition of Polaroid photos the artist took of the stone. He returned to the title for the 2002 series of "window sculptures" to which the pictured work belongs. These framed panels are a screen that blocks the passage of particular moments yet also a gateway that opens onto an entire universe of memories.
