Andre Carl, *1935 (Quincy, Massachusetts) Lives in New York, works with sculpture and installation. ALomoCU,2000 99 copper and 130 aluminium panels, 50 x 50 x 0.5 cm each, 1050 x 550 x 0.5 cm overall © 2006, ProLitteris, Zürich Carl Andre has consistently sidestepped the mimesis of visual reality and the emergence of narrative. Rejecting the conventional artistic canon, his basic premises evolved in the 1960s in the context of Conceptual and Minimal Art. Viewers are to be active partners with the art emerging as the sum of their concrete perceptions. With this copper and aluminium floor sculpture, the unprepossessing, seemingly casual composition becomes a complex work of art through a process of active involvement. People walk on the metal slabs, listen to their footsteps and the reverberations off the surrounding walls, perceive the enclosed space as a volume, look at the floor sculpture from different vantage points and thus create the work in their own minds. |
