Tillmans' photographic work has often been described as chronicling the "Generation X" subculture of the 1990s, a time when young artists strove to set themselves apart from the mainstream and its expectations and norms. His work does not simply document that emerging generation: it appropriates from it a whole photographic vocabulary.

His overriding aim is to show that different lifestyles, a different economy of dreams and desires and even a different circulation of capital are all still possible despite the hegemony of establishment culture and economics. He pursues this aim by giving equal importance to the artists Gilbert & George, club kids, landscapes, a pair of trousers, stained T-shirts, a chair, Concorde and Kate Moss.
