Shearer Steven, *1968 (New Westminster, California) Lives in Vancouver, works with painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and installation. Geometric Healing,2004 12 screenprints of various formats hung as a unit, 330.5 x 237.5 cm overall © Steven Shearer A major theme in Shearer's work is youth and adolescence, ranging from the coy androgyny of 1970s teen heartthrobs Shaun Cassidy and Leif Garrett to the aggression and alienation of suburban adolescents with heavy metal aspirations, bad hair and bad skin. His silkscreened reproductions of children's art refer to social research studies in the 1960s. As described by Eva Presenhuber Gallery: "Children were asked, for therapeutic or educational purposes, to respond to modern art that was shown to them by channelling their creative energy into drawing and painting. Shearer examines these image worlds in works like Geometric Healing. By choosing the names of well-known artists for the titles of the individual pictures, he comments on and questions a somewhat dubious therapeutic approach." |
