Schweizer Alpen II,1969 Serigraphs, set of 5, 70 x 70 cm © Gerhard Richter Mountains are a recurring subject in Gerhard Richter’s work. Detachment from the original merely serves to heighten the impact of these prints. They are based on paintings, which are in turn based on photographs taken in 1968 from the artist’s airplane window on a flight to Milan. In the paintings, the heavily applied sections of paint chart out the contours of light and dark in the "original" photographs. |

Richter Gerhard, *1932 (Waltersdorf, Germany) Lives in Cologne, Germany, works with painting, photography, sculpture, prints and sculpture. Meer,1973 Photomontage, 25 x 25 cm © Gerhard Richter In 1961, Gerhard Richter defected to West Germany. He expressed his radical rejection of art in the GDR by starting over in the numerical classification of his works (No. 1, 1962). He has since produced an eclectic oeuvre, ranging from Photorealism to Pop Art to Minimalism to Abstraction and from black, white and grey tones to intense colour. Gerhard Richter eschews ideological messages and symbols. In his own words, his works have "no style, no composition, no judgment". |
