Lichtenstein Roy, *1923 1997 (New York) Worked with painting, prints and sculpture. Sunrise,1967 Screenprint, 47.5 x 62.5 cm © 2007, Pro Litteris, Zurich Roy Lichtenstein is considered one of the staunchest proponents of American Pop Art. Images from mass advertising and comic strips, blown up in scale to reveal the distinctive pattern of Benday dots, are the hallmark of his work. The innovation of his approach lies not in the choice of motif but in the sense of emptiness that marks the way in which it is rendered. Sunrise evokes a paradoxical impression. The conventional romanticism of the motif is undermined by the cool – and ironic – manner of its depiction. |
