Fabritius Tom, *1972 (Radeberg, Germany) Lives in Leipzig, works with painting. Vulkan,2002 Watercolour on paper, 179 x 137 cm © Tom Fabritius With his focus on figurative painting, Tom Fabritius takes up an approach from the DDR era when abstract art was suspect and the study of nature formed the basis for representational painting. Fabritius has developed a technique of his own: With a camera at the ready, he zaps through countless television channels with the volume turned down. When a certain motif appeals to him, he takes a snapshot of the image, which serves as the basis for his works. Vulkan (Volcano) exemplifies this modus operandi. In 2001, images of Mount Etna ran on every TV channel after the volcano demonstrated to the inhabitants of Nicolosi and the whole world the overpowering force of nature. Tom Fabritius takes this motif from the contemporary media context and presents it as a watercolour on paper. |
