Empreintes de pinceau no. 50, répétées à intervalles réguliers de 30 cm,1998 Acrylic, dimensions variable, © Niele Toroni Since the 1960s, Niele Toroni has followed a strict methodology, taking a paint-laden no. 50 brush and making imprints of the brush in regular 30-centimetre intervals on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, paper, walls and floors. Here he has applied the paint directly on the side wall of an overhead walkway. In the words of the artist: "Empreintes de pinceau no. 50, répétées à intervalles réguliers de 30 cm is the title of all my work and all my works. As I've written before, this is the exact definition; this formulation is the common denominator of all paintings/works; it says everything and nothing (doesn't mean a thing) when the given work is not seen." |
